When Breitling first launched it in 1957, the company took a different approach to other diving watches of the time. The Ref. 1004 (a slim piece of jewellery that only displays the time) and the Ref. 807 (the world’s first dedicated diving chronograph) were not just about exploring the underwater world, but also about doing it well. The spear-and-arrow hands, the anodised rotating bezel and the naturally slim proportions quickly made it a favourite of stylish adventurers who lived for the sea and the scene.

Breitling’s storied association with chronographs and aeronautics dates back to 1884, when Léon Breitling laid the foundation for a company that would remain in his family for nearly a century.
In 1923, a patented pocket watch with two chronograph pushers caused a sensation. The one pusher in the 2 o’clock position was used for starting and stopping, while the other, integrated into the crown, reset the chronograph mechanism. For the first time, it was possible for the stopwatch to measure multiple times in sequence.
Navigation and timer - or simply Navitimer
In 1952, Willy Breitling developed a chronograph with a circular slide rule that pilots could use to make all the necessary flight calculations. Two years later, the American Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the largest pilots' club in the world, appointed his design as its official timepiece.
