The case, crown and pushers of this model are made of robust and lightweight titanium. IWC pioneered the introduction of this difficult-to-work metal into the watch industry in 1980, when the company introduced the first wristwatch with a titanium case and bracelet.
Titanium has the highest strength-to-density ratio of all metals and is therefore frequently used in the automotive industry to manufacture components for high-performance engines. The grade 5 titanium alloy used for the case of the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 is around 45 per cent lighter than steel and remarkably strong.
